Following a tooth extraction, proper care is essential for a smooth recovery and to prevent complications like infection or dry socket. Here’s how to take care of the extraction site:
First 24 Hours:
✔ Bite down on gauze for 30–45 minutes to control bleeding. Replace with fresh gauze if needed.
✔ Rest and avoid strenuous activity to allow healing.
✔ Do NOT rinse, spit, or use a straw, as suction can dislodge the clot.
✔ Apply a cold compress (10–15 minutes at a time) to reduce swelling.
Pain Management:
✔ Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed.
✔ Avoid aspirin, as it can increase bleeding.
✔ If needed, switch to warm saltwater rinses after the first 24 hours to promote healing.
Eating & Drinking:
✔ Stick to soft foods (yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup) for the first day.
✔ Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or acidic foods that can irritate the site.
✔ Drink plenty of water, but avoid alcohol and caffeine for the first 24 hours.
Oral Hygiene & Care:
✔ Resume gentle brushing, avoiding the extraction site.
✔ After 24 hours, rinse lightly with salt water (1 teaspoon salt in warm water).
✔ Do NOT smoke for at least 48 hours, as it can cause complications.
