This information is to help you make an informed decision about having teeth whitening treatment. You are encouraged to ask questions and have the answers to your satisfaction before you give permission for the whitening.
Home Tooth Whitening
An impression (mould) of your teeth to construct a tooth whitening tray. These trays ensure that there is minimal leakage and maximum cosmetic effect. Once constructed the trays will be checked for accuracy of fit and specific instructions will be provided on your tooth-whitening regime.
In Chair Whitening
Your teeth will be isolated from your cheeks and gums to apply a stronger hydrogen whitening gel. Due to the strength of the gel. Results are much quicker than home whitening.
During the procedure, the whitening gel will be applied to your teeth in a series of "session", each lasting 20 minutes.
Maximum number of sessions in one visit is 3.
During the entire treatment, a plastic retractor will be placed in your mouth to help keep it open and the soft tissues of your mouth (gum tissue) will be covered by a light cured resin barrier to ensure they are not exposed to the whitening gel. After the treatment is completed, the retractor and all the gel and tissue coverings will be removed from your mouth. Before and after, the shade of your upper front teeth will be assessed and recorded.
Tooth Sensitivity/Pain
During the first 24hrs after treatment, some patients can experience some tooth sensitivity or pain. This is normal and is usually mild, but it can be worse in susceptible individuals. Normally, tooth sensitivity or pain following in office whitening subsides within 24hrs however in rare cases can persist for longer periods of time in susceptible individuals. Persons with exposed root surfaces, recession, open cavities, leaking fillings, exposed dentin, and existing tooth sensitivity may find those conditions increase or prolong tooth sensitivity or pain after treatment.
Food to avoid while whitening and the 48hrs after completion
Colas, curries, beetroot, red wine, coffees, teas (including green tea), berries, candy, cranberry juice, pomegranate juice, prune juice, tobacco products, mustard, ketchup, soya sauce and red sauces. These foods all have bright and strong colours which may affect the bleaching process. Avoid any foods that stain a white t-shirt. Avoid Chlorhexidine containing mouthwashes.
